Who is a Prophet?

I want to deeply appreciate all my teachers, especially Kenneth E. Hagin and Bill Hamon, whom the Lord has used to shape my thinking one way or another on the prophetic ministry, particularly on some of the issues we are considering today.

I want to also deeply appreciate all those whom the Lord has used prophetically to speak one or more things into our lives and ministries over the years.

I learnt some of these things I’m writing on from others, but some were taught me by the Lord. My wife has been a great example for me in understanding the prophetic ministry better.

A lot of confusion is going on today about who is truly a prophet of God. One is not a prophet because one operates in the simple gift of prophecy. Neither is one a prophet because one sees visions or hears God’s voice occasionally. Nor is one a prophet simply because one’s dreams come true.

You see, I am not a prophet by calling. If I were to choose my calling, I would have chosen the prophetic ministry personally a long time ago! But God, who knows all things called me as an apostle and a teacher (We are all called to be preachers first)!

Hebrews 5:4 NIV

Though I move in visions and dreams to some extent by his grace, yet I am not called to be a prophet, but primarily to be an apostle. However, every apostle should move in the prophetic ministry as the Spirit desires.

About 2007, I prayed and fasted for virtually one month asking God for the visionary gifts of the Holy Spirit. In answer to my prayer, I began to see visions while awake. They were just coming at different times. Although I had had few visions occasionally in the past before then, yet this was a new experience for me because it was like a flowing river! But, after a while, it seemed to stop. So, I was alarmed thinking maybe I had done something wrong. Later, it was restored, though, I do not move in them like my wife does. Her own is more frequent while my own is less frequent. (No one can switch on and off any of the 9 gifts of the Spirit. It operates as the Spirit desires.)

“and God verified the message by signs and wonders and various miracles and BY GIVING GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WHENEVER HE CHOSE TO DO SO.”

Hebrews 2:4 NLT

I was given a prophecy in the 1990’s on a prayer mountain warning me not to focus on other people’s anointing and lose mine. So, I know I am not a prophet by calling, but sometimes when the visions are flowing, anyone may wonder: “Is Segun also among the prophets?”

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? IS SAUL ALSO AMONG THE PROPHETS? [12] And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, IS SAUL ALSO AMONG THE PROPHETS?

1 Samuel 10:11-12 KJV

You see, Saul prophesied, but that never made him a prophet just as seeing visions does not make one a prophet! Let me admitted that I have been fascinated by the ministries of different prophets and prophetesses over the years. My wife is raw prophetess whose grace amazes me. For instance, some days ago, a man of God was being introduced or advertised as “God’s General” on TV. And God spoke to her clearly: “He’s not my General. When you see my General, I will let you know.” When she told me that, I answered her: “Maybe, he’s a Lieutenant General!” Funnily enough, some days later, I read some things about this man of God online that confirmed what God had told her, though, I did not bother to tell her about it!

Also several years, ago, I invited a highly gifted guy who came from another African country to Nigeria to the local Church I belonged to then. He could even write and/or speak Hebrew. The pastor quickly made him a Sunday School teacher because he was a good speaker. Out of the blues, one day, my wife told me: “God said this guy is full of worldliness!”

Honestly, in the natural, there were no signs of worldliness we could see, nevertheless I admonished him with “AND BE NOT CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD: BUT BE YE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2 KJV

Shortly afterwards, the guy ran away from where he was putting up with his friend. So the police wanted to arrest him, but he was gone! He had slept with different ladies. He had duped different people of their money promising to buy shares for them. In fact, one or more empty beer bottles or cans were found in his room. We were also told that he was an evangelist who committed a crime in his country. But one day, as he was driving to work or so, he parked the vehicle and escaped to Nigeria to avoid being arrested!

In this series “Who is a Prophet”, we will be looking at TYPES of prophets, KINDS of prophets, FORMS of prophets, CLASSES of prophets, CATEGORIES of prophets, and LEVEL & DIVISIONS of prophets.
